On Pause reflected on broad ideas of caesural pauses. A caesura is a break… an interruption… a cut. A space for thought. A momentary breath. Articulating a connection between two phrases, a caesura is a literary and musical device that creates emphasis or provides respite. Importantly, caesurae disobey established patterns and detour natural rhythms. How can we apply this musical and poetic concept to our lives and embrace times of pause as a way to find connection between two moments?
Artworks in On Pause expressed notions of pause indirectly, as a reference through subjects or processes. Some offered an invitation to celebrate the in-between, the interlude and anticipation. Others, highlighted mindlessness and the perils of procrastination. Together in chorus, the artwork in this exhibition echoed and reverberated off one another to provide a refuge and immersive space in which the viewer can enter and… linger.

Full Moon Book Club
Diverging from a traditional book club style (no prerequisite reading required), Full Moon Book Club invited collective reading of selected poetry, short stories and excerpts. Some of these readings were thematic to the exhibition, while others were selected by the artists and were pieces of writing that have been influential to their practices. These passages were read aloud with the hope of understanding the artworks in the exhibition in new ways, allowing for a space of thinking deeply about the works included.

MFA Open Studio
Students from York University’s Master’s of Fine Arts program opened their studios for visitors to explore.

AGYU Vitrines
Turn Around, Bright Eyes, 2019
Ella Dawn McGeough with Stefana Fratila and Kiko Sounds*

Located in the breezeway outside of AGYU, on view to June 23, 2019. AGYU Vitrines were an off-site component of the exhibition On Pause.

There was once a picnic on its surface, this pearl, this orange moon, this acoustic mirror, this exquisite corpse. Feeling spacey, bodies shifted position from beings to becomings and good vibrations, like wine, overflowed. As sound rounds a corner, they tried to move beyond the limitations of analysis and cross distances of difference. Until, in a sensational zone of resonant affinity, they floated—tethered—together.

*The artists would like to thank Trevor Turple for his assistance in realizing the sound component for this project.
