Saskia Olde-Wolbers, Untitled, 1971. Still from video.
The London-based Dutch artist Saskia Olde Wolbers presents two video projections, Trailer (2005) and the premiere of Deadline (2007). Olde Wolbers makes short narrative video. While having the otherworldly appearance of computer-generated images, they are actually filmed in meticulously constructed, miniature film sets. While seemingly fantastic stories, the voice-over narratives are based on actual reported events.
Deadline, a road movie of a trip from Gambia to Benin, is fictionally recomposed from stories Olde Wolbers gathered from her stay in a Gambian fishing village. Set between an opulent movie theatre and the jungle, Trailer unravels the fantastic story of a man who learns from a film trailer that he was adopted as the illegitimate offspring of two Hollywood ‘B’ actors who crashed in the Amazon in the 1930s.
