AGYU @ Pride
You don’t need superpowers to be a superhero.
You just need a little glitter.
BAM!
SUPER QUEERS JUSTICE LEAGUE
UNITE with YORK@PRIDE 2013!
YORK @ PRIDE
June 24 – 30, 2013
Pride is a celebration of the history, courage, and future of the LGBTTIQQ2SA* communities. It unites us to rejoice in everything that we are and all that we can be. York @ Pride invites you to connect with the spirit of Pride and rise up in solidarity with Toronto’s queer communities and their allies. Together we will showcase the acceptance, diversity, and solidarity that York promotes. Super Queer Powers Unite!
The Art Gallery of York University (AGYU), Centre for Human Rights (CHR), York Federation of Students (YFS), TBLGAY, and SexGen York committee want you to harness your inner superhero and get involved with Toronto’s Pride Week and all of the multi-faceted York @ Pride festivities!
Participate!
The revelry begins with the Pride Flag Raising Ceremonies at Keele and Glendon campuses. The official Glendon campus Flag Raising Ceremony takes place at the York Hall, B wing on the first floor on Monday, June 24 at 12:30pm. Join us for cake and presentations by guest speakers Kenneth McRoberts, Principal, Glendon; Noël Badiou, Director, CHR; and Krista McNamara, Coordinator GLgbt*, Glendon’s LGBTQ student organization.
Pride kicks off on Keele campus at Vari Hall Rotunda on Tuesday, June 25 from 10:30 – 11:30 am. Enjoy delicious homemade cupcakes (in rainbow effect) and watch the flag soar high and proud over the Commons during the annual flag raising ceremony. Invited guests Janet Morrison, Vice-Provost Students; Tyler Morehouse, Internal Coordinator, TBLGAY; Noël Badiou, Director, CHR; Marc Stein, Professor, School of Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies; and Gayle McFadden, VP Campaigns and Advocacy, YFS will remark on their ongoing commitment to equity and safety of LGBTTIQQ2SA at York.
Collaborate!
You don’t need superpowers to be a superhero. You just need a little glitter. BAM! What is Pride without the sparkle? Students are invited to collaborate and decorate the York float banners, personalize their own superhero capes, and make signs to hold high on Monday, June 24th from 12:00pm – 5:00pm in Vari Hall in preparation for the parade.
Visit us at Pride Toronto in the Community Fair on Church Street, Saturday, June 29 and Sunday June 30 from 11am to 5pm each day. To help us get in the super spirit, AGYU commissioned artist Maurice Vellekoop to create York’s very own Super Queer Super Heroes! POW! These super friends are the out-of-this-world mascots of York @ Pride. Come to the booth and get your stickers, pins, and have your photo taken with the Super Queer characters.
If you would like to volunteer at the Community Fair booth, please contact Suzanne Carte for scheduling details at scarte@yorku.ca or 416-736-5169. Don’t forget to bring that sunscreen.
Perform!
Keep a look out for our York @ Pride caped crusaders at the 33rd annual Pride Parade on Sunday June 30th starting at 2pm at Bloor & Church with a new route that goes all the way down Yonge to Dundas Square! Our gang will be jumping and dancing to the booty bouncing tracks of DJ Anni Spadafora who has created the ultimate party music playlist. All York students, faculty, staff and their friends are welcome. Ensure you dress for the weather and bring sunscreen – the march goes ahead rain or shine.
