Artist Jessica Campbell, whose work includes comics and graphic novels, will respond to Andrea Carlson: A Painting is a Coin through the lens of sequential art. Andrea Carlson’s work include stacked images, mirroring, movement, and transformation. The influence of sequential art, a broad category that ranges from hieroglyphics to comics and graphic novels, can be seen in Carlson’s paintings, where time unfolds over the surface of a single artwork. Join as Jessica Campbell responds to the exhibition through her practice and pedagogy.

Jessica Campbell is an interdisciplinary artist who works predominantly in textiles, drawing, and comics. She is the author of three graphic novels, including the recent Rave (Drawn and Quarterly, 2022), and her comics have been published by MoMA, The New Yorker, Hyperallergic, and The Nib, among other publications. She has had solo exhibitions at the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia; The Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago; The Urban Institute of Contemporary Arts in Grand Rapids, MI; Western Exhibitions in Chicago; and Field Projects in NYC. She is an Assistant Professor of Expanded Drawing at York University.
